Toyota recalls 7.43 million vehicles worldwide

Houston: Leading car manufacturer Toyota Motor Corp has reached an agreement worth more than USD 1 billion to settle a lawsuit involving unintended acceleration in some of its vehicles as the company recalled 7.43 million vehicles worldwide to fix the problem.
In a statement on Wednesday, Toyota had said it would take a one-time, USD 1.1 billion pre-tax charge against earnings to "cover the estimated costs of the economic loss settlement and possible resolution costs of civil litigation brought in California by the District Attorney of Orange County and an investigation by a multi-state group of Attorneys General stemming from previous recalls."
It comes after Toyota has paid nearly USD 70 million in US fines after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had failed to recall millions of vehicles in a timely fashion.

Under the proposed settlement, Toyota will offer special vehicle coverage for up to 150,000 miles on 16.3 million vehicles and will retrofit as many as 2.7 million vehicles with brake override systems, the statement said.
The special coverage will be for Engine Control Module, Cruise Control Switch, Accelerator Pedal Assembly, Stop Lamp Switch, and Throttle Body Assembly, it said.
Toyota will also spend USD 30 million to fund automobile safety research and education related to issues in the suits. The fund will be divided between contributions to university-based automobile/transportation research institutes and an education/information program for automobile drivers, it said.
"This agreement marks a significant step forward for our company, one that will enable us to put more of our energy, time and resources into Toyota's central focus: making the best vehicles we can for our customers and doing everything we can to meet their needs," said Christopher P Reynolds, group
vice president and general counsel, Toyota Motor Sales, USA, and chief legal officer, Toyota Motor North America.
"In keeping with our core principles, we have structured this agreement in ways that work to put our customers first and demonstrate that they can count on Toyota to stand behind our vehicles."
The settlement must still be approved by a federal court judge. The recall involves 7.43 million vehicles worldwide sold under the Toyota and Scion brands. This is the largest safety-related service action the maker has announced since it began a series of recalls related to the risk of unintended acceleration in late 2009.
That and other safety issues led Toyota to recall 14 million vehicles in 2009 and 2010. It's the biggest single recall since Ford Motor Co pulled back 7.9 million vehicles in 1996.
Many of the vehicles involved in the new Toyota recall also were called back one or more times due to unintended acceleration issues.
The latest recall is the result of a problem with a potentially defective power window switch on the driver's side of the affected vehicles which, the maker says, "may experience a 'notchy' or sticky feel during operation.
Toyota already announced recalls for several models involving similar window switches and in February, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced it would open an investigation into the issue.
But at the time it focused on just 830,000 Camry and RAV-4 models sold during the 2007 model year.
One can check one's call on the Toyota's recall web page. The maker estimates the inspection and repair process will take little more than an hour and involves the disassembly of the master switch and, if necessary, the application of a special fluorine grease.
NHTSA has received more than 200 reports of problems involving the defective switch including fires, though there are no known crashes or injuries.
At least 39 similar problems were reported in Japan, where 460,000 Toyota vehicles were recalled.
Another 1.39 million vehicles are subject to the new recall in Europe, while the massive safety campaign also covers Australia, China and other parts of Asia and the Mideast.

Evoking Style: The Range Rover Evoque

Only an SUV built with style, luxury and capability can attract this kind of attention

The smallest, lightest and most fuel-efficient Range Rover (RR) ever produced. 'How much of a Range Rover is it?' This is one massive burden every Evoque must be carrying as it rolls out of the Halewood factory, near Liverpool. By the time they reach the Indian shores, more load is added in the form of import duties and taxes. So now the question is, as the British say, will it be worth all the quid? We'll try to answer that in this report.

Design

To cut a long chase short, the Evoque looks just stunning! This is Range Rover's new design direction, traces of which are also visible in the DC100 Defender concept showcased at the Auto Expo earlier this year. The Evoque is an ultra-modern take on British SUVs. It's compact, chic and super sexy. Sorry, I had to use the word, after all Victoria Beckham was part of its design and style team. This spunky mini-SUV will make more heads turn than many oversized, boxy SUVs that you might have bought to do the same.

Soft front design, with slit-eye type menacing Xenon with LED headlight. Large wheels, flared wheel arches that encroach upon the bonnet on the sides, low roof-lines that taper further towards the tail, squeezing the rear windows. The design opposes traditional Range Rovers and yet manages to be very, very attractive. The Evoque is macho and intelligent in a metrosexual way. It's sensitive and brawny, a little bit like Christian Bale in American Psycho.

Audi to raise prices by up to Rs 3.69 lakh from January 1

New Delhi:

Luxury car make Audi today said it will hike the prices of its entire range of models by up to Rs 3.69 lakh with effect from January 1 due to rising input costs and falling rupee.

"As we have stated earlier, the overall market scenario is challenging. The rise in input cost, depreciating rupee as well as continuous increase in fuel prices have made us re-evaluate our pricing strategy in India and increase the prices of our entire model range," Audi India Head Michael Perschke said in a statement.

Last month, Audi India had said it will raise prices of its entire range of vehicles by up to five per cent from next year, but did not specify details on what will be the exact amount of hike for each model. Elaborating the announcement today, the company said: "The price increase would range between Rs 59,000 to Rs 3,69,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi) across the model range from January 1, 2013."

The company sells various models in India such as sedans A4, A6 and A8, sports utility vehicles Q3, Q5 and Q7 and sports car R8, which are currently priced between Rs 27.85 lakh and Rs 1.7 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Bajaj launches Pulsar 200NS in AP

Hyderabad:Bajaj Auto appears unfazed by the market slowdown that the two-wheeler segment mirrored in the first quarter of this fiscal.

The company is confident of registering a "double-digit growth" this year, despite the two-wheeler industry registering a six per cent growth last quarter. "We believe our new launches will keep our market share growing," said Mr K. Srinivas, President (Two-wheelers).

He was in the city in connection with the launch of its new product, Pulsar 200NS, claimed to be the world's first motorcycle to adopt triple spark engine technology in Andhra Pradesh. It is priced at Rs 86,754 ex-showroom in Hyderabad.

Last fiscal saw the sale of 10 million bikes across the country, with Bajaj Auto garnering a share of 2.5 million (or 25 per cent). Mr Srinivas said that another trend was that the growth in the over-100 cc segment was quicker than the 100-cc category.

The former had a share of 34 per cent in the overall bike sales last year, but grew at 18 per cent, while the latter reflected a growth rate of nine per cent.

'This trend is to our advantage, as we have a 40 per cent market share in this segment. The second and third-time bike owners are going in for the over-100cc and sports bikes,' he said.

The firm is ramping up production of its new 200cc Pulsar product, as it intends to complete the national roll-out by August. 'From September, we will begin to export the bike. Last year, we sold one million bikes overseas,' he added.

BMW may look at MINI production in India

BMW may look at MINI production in India :

HYDERABAD:  Luxury car-maker BMW Wednesday said it may look at manufacturing its MINI brand in India but that would depend on the market potential for the premium small car.

BMW Group India president Philipp von Sahr said the company's first priority was to establish MINI as a brand.

"BMW Group has a policy that production follows market. The MINI market is huge and I would not exclude (that) we will produce here," he told reporters here after launching the MINI.

"At the moment we are in the learning phase. We will not exclude MINI production facility in India but at the moment it is 100 percent imported car and we are 100 percent concentrated on learning how the brand is accepted," he said.

He pointed out that BMW was sourcing many parts of MINI from India for its world-wide production.

"India is really an important supplier market for BMW Group, especially for MINI. Lot of techniques, especially engine technique, in MINI are from India," he said and indicated that localisation in other brands would also increase.

Hyderabad became the third city after Mumbai and Delhi to see the rollout of the premium brand in the small car segment.

Since the launch in January, BMW has sold 280 MINI cars till November and expects to end the year with 300 units.

KUN Exclusive, exclusive dealership for MINI, also opened in Hyderabad. This is the fourth dealership of the brand and the company expects the number to go up to eight in 2014.

He hoped that the new dealerships and additional models would drive MINI's growth in 2013, though the economic situation was likely to remain more or less at the same level as 2012.

"The total luxury car market in India is around 30,000 units at the moment but we think it will grow next year. Though the economic situation is not so positive, with additional dealers and additional models there is always a potential to grow," he said.

"The first months were surprisingly good. There is big demand. There is big market. We want to continue learning in 2013," he said while declining to project any numbers for the next year.

To another query, he said BMW India did not expect any sales drop in other brands during 2012. He also ruled out price cut to counter the adverse market conditions.

"We will not have any price support, discount or so. Even in other brands you will not see that a lot. If you start with discounts it will immediately damage the brand. We want to develop MINI brand as also the other brands," he said.

He said no cut in the interests rate would also not have any impact on MINI as it was in a starting phase. "BMW as a group is always known for a strategy which is sustainable and not short term sales," he added.

Describing MINI as the only luxury brand in India selling smaller cars, Sahr hoped that sooner or later it would be a brand in all major cities. He said they started rolling out the brand in major cities and in the long term would expand to tier-II and tier-III cities.

In the long term, BMW expects success in India the way it achieved in other markets in the world.

"Indians are car crazy. They love cars. This is a great country with a lot of history and a vast market," said Sahr, who took over in October.

BMW has sold three million MINI cars worldwide since the launch. It has six different models but has initially rolled out three models in India - MINI, MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S. With a price band of Rs.25-35 lakh, they are available in six-speed automatic transmission with powerful and efficient petrol variants.
